It's May, and that means it is National Asian Month! During the month of May, we celebrate great Asian accomplishments all across the globe. Asian people and culture have been around for thousands of years. China and Japan are the most known Asian cultures.
China is one of the oldest countries in the world, dating back to 2070 BCE. Japan dates back to 660 BCE, and some historians argue that Japan may be older. Some historians think Japan may be as old as 15 million years old. Some people forget that Japan and China aren't the only Asian countries.
There are so many other Asian cultures, such as Indian, Mongolian, Indonesian, Filipino, South Korean, and so much more. Let's take a look at some of these Asian countries' facts and inventions that came out of them. Let's first start off with China. China is so old that we still use one of their inventions today. That would be toilet paper. A fun fact about China is that red represents happiness.
Now let's talk about Japan. Japan invented Emojis, which emojis mean "picture character" in Japanese. Fun fact Japan has over 6,800 islands.
India is another of these countries with a long history of many inventions. But one that really stands out to me is the game of chess. India has such a large population with different cultures inside themselves that they have 22 recognized languages.
Mongolia is widely known for their domination in war with Genghis Khan. Staying on the subject of the military, did you know that Mongolia invented the modern day hand grenades. A fun fact about Mongolia is that they love their fermented horse milk! fermented horse milk is a traditional drink in Mongolia.
As of 2019, Filipinos are the third largest group of Asians in the United States. The invention that stands out the most to me that came from the Philippines are the yoyo and medical incubators. The Philippines is home to the world's longest underground river on the island of Palawan.
Indonesia is another Asian island country in eastern Asia. One of their inventions has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, with the story of Benjamin Franklin popularizing it. That would be the Kite. A fun fact about Indonesia is that it's home to the world's youngest population. The majority of Indonesia's population is under 30.
South Korea is another popular nation in Asia. One thing invented in South Korea that many people may not know is contactless smart cards. A fun fact about South Korea is when you're born, you're 1 years old instead of zero.
As you may have learned, Asian culture has brought a lot to our world and impacts the way we live everyday.
